Have you ever considered a career in Arts Administration, in the economic development of an ever expanding and vibrant cultural district, in the institutional development of a complex and multifaceted organization? Have you ever wanted to play a part of bringing a production to the stage, of promoting the arts to the region, of supporting the technological infrastructure paramount to smooth operation of a diverse and divergent organization?

If any of these ideas appeal to you, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is the place for your internship! At “The Trust” Students gain experience in arts leadership through a 10-week program. Internships are available in the following departments and many have specific qualifications that must be met for consideration.

INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Institutional Development department raises operating funds to support and enhance the Cultural District, its growth, and its development. The department does this in a number of ways - direct mail solicitations, staff campaigns, grants, cultivations and special events.

Development Systems Internship

Coordinate a review and revision of the Trust’s individual membership tracking procedures. Training will be provided on process improvement strategies and implementation. Experience with Tessitura, Raiser’s Edge or equivalent database management system a plus. This internship will assist the Development Systems Coordinator with prospect research and donor data management.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Education and Community Engagement department provides educational experiences to a diverse audiences of all ages. The department adds to the cultural vitality of Pittsburgh by working with arts organizations, universities, corporations, and educators to develop programs that nurture an appreciation for the arts.

HIGHMARK FIRST NIGHT PITTSBURGH

Highmark First Night® Pittsburgh is a unique, family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration focused on the arts. Held in more than 200 cities worldwide, the festival is a wonderful way to bring in the New Year. Centered in the Cultural District, Highmark First Night Pittsburgh has something for everyone, from children’s activities and performances by nationally-known musicians, to installations by local artists and a spectacular fireworks finale. Interns will have the opportunity to assist with Highmark First Night marketing, promotions, social media, booking/programming coordination and other administrative projects.  This internship runs September through January.

MARKETING

The Marketing & Communications Department provides internship opportunities throughout the year for qualified candidates who are in a related program of study and have a strong interest in business administration, marketing, public relations, advertising and publications. The selected intern will participate in the marketing and promotion of shows, writing copy for publications and social media, and various projects to advance the mission of the Trust. Intern candidates should possess excellent writing and communication skills.

Note: Candidates for this department must also submit two writing samples from a school/volunteer/other project, and a 300-word narrative on the “best arts event you have attended in the last year.”

PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S THEATER

Pittsburgh International Children's Theater presents, promotes, and premieres international, national, and regional performing and visual arts programming that appeals to children and families. In additon to mainstage performances, Pittsburgh international Children's Theater also produces one of only four international children's theater festivals in the USA. The Festival features professional theater, dance, music, visual arts plus a grounds area bursting with crafts, activities, and workshops. Pittsburgh International Children's Theater is sponsored by Citizens Bank. 

PITTSBURGH JAZZ LIVE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival was first held in June of 2011, in cooperation with the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, making the Trust the biggest supporter of jazz in the region, with more resources and support going to regional and national jazz musicians, and more programming available to the community. The PJLIF Internship will be from April – June and will be responsible for grassroots marketing, assisting with artist hospitality and company management, assisting as a liaison between downtown / Cultural District businesses and festival management, representing the Trust in a variety of situations before, during and after the festival, and other duties as assigned in preparation, onsite, and following the festival.

DOLLAR BANK THREE RIVERS ARTS FESTIVAL

A production of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the mission of Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival is to connect the community to the arts. The popular festival of art, music, performance, food and community runs for 10 days each June at Point State Park, Gateway Center, and numerous Cultural District gallery locations. 

Note: This internship runs from March to mid-June.

REAL ESTATE

The Real Estate Department manages over 1,000,000 square feet of property owned by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. In addition to fulfilling the Trust's mission to energize Downtown through the arts and economic development, the department coordinates public-private partnerships to enhance the Cultural District's vitality and serves as a guardian to protect the existing work the Trust has invested to transform a once downtrodden area of Downtown to a national model of urban revitalization.  

Note: This internship is recommended for Architecture, Urban Design, and/or Economic Development students.


Unless otherwise noted, internships are offered in the Fall (September – December), Winter/Spring (January – April) and Summer (May – August). Open to college students (graduate/undergraduate) or recent college graduates
